Carbohydrates: not all are created equal

Carbohydrates, commonly known as "carbs," have long been the subject of dietary debates. They are often blamed for weight gain and health issues, but it's essential to understand that not all carbs are created equal. Lets take a look at refined vs whole food carbs:

Refined Carbs: Refined carbohydrates have undergone extensive processing, which often strips them of their natural nutrients and fibre. This processing makes them easily digestible and rapidly raises blood sugar levels. Common sources of refined carbs include sugary snacks, white bread, sugary drinks, crackers, cakes and pastries.

Whole Food Carbs: On the other side of the spectrum, we have whole food carbs. These are found in their natural, unprocessed state. They provide numerous health benefits, including steady energy, fibre, vitamins, and minerals. Whole food carbs include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts.

Carbohydrates are a vital component of a balanced diet. They serve as the body's primary source of energy and are essential for brain function. The key is to make informed choices. Make an effort to choose whole food carbs over refined ones. Opt for brown rice over white rice, whole wheat bread over white bread, and fresh fruits over fruit juices. Additionally, combining carbs with lean proteins and healthy fats can further stabilise blood sugar levels and promote fullness.
